Actor Erik Estrada To Lead Krewe Of Rio Parada - 12/29/2006
(Lafayette, LA) - Television and motion picture star Erik Estrada has agreed to serve as Duque du Parada or Grand Marshal in Lafayette’s Krewe of Carnivale en Rio Parade this Mardi Gras season.
Erik Estrada is best known for his role as hunky motorcycle cop Frank “Ponch” Poncherello on the long-running television series “CHiPs”. Over his long career, Estrada has starred in more than 100 different television shows and feature films, including “The Bold and the Beautiful”, “Sealab 2021”, “Baywatch”, and most recently as the voice of Senor Felipe on the popular PBS children’s series “Maya and Miguel”.
“We’re so thrilled to have Erik Estrada coming to Lafayette for our parade,” said Rebecca Landry, krewe captain. “We hope that his wide popularity and infectious smile will draw quite a crowd to Lafayette for our parade”. The krewe is busy planning two other public appearances for Estrada during his weekend visit in the Hub City.
Heart-pounding samba music, broadcast live from UL radio station KRVS as well as from each float, will also be a featured part of the parade. Over 500 brightly dressed riders on twenty Brazilian-themed floats will unload over $100,000 worth of beads and souvenirs on Acadiana’s parade-goers.
The Krewe of Carnivale en Rio’s parade is set for Saturday, February 10th, beginning at 6:30 pm in downtown Lafayette. The parade, launched in 2006, is on a new weekend for Mardi Gras in Lafayette, the anchor event for building a second weekend for Mardi Gras tourism in Acadiana.”
The 585-member Krewe of Carnivale en Rio was founded in 2005. More information about the parade or krewe membership can be obtained on the krewe’s website at www.kreweofrio.com.
