Lafayette's Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival - 01/15/2010
Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival is pleased to announce the lineup of films that will be screened at the 5th Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival beginning on Thursday, January 28th and continuing through Sunday, January 31, 2010, at various venues in Lafayette, Louisiana. The Festival will include a retrospective of seven films by Québécois filmmaker André Gladu. “We are delighted to have a filmmaker of Mr. Gladu’s caliber in attendance for this year’s Festival. He has celebrated and preserved our local culture and heritage in film for over 30 years, and we owe him a debt of gratitude,” said festival founder and veteran filmmaker Pat Mire.
In addition, New York filmmakers David Redmon and Ashley Sabin will be filmmakers-in-residence, presenting their award-winning film Mardi Gras: Made In China, accompanied by a thoughtful discussion of the Mardi Gras tradition, to be followed by a Mardi Gras-inspired reception at LITE on Friday evening. Mr. Redmon and Ms. Sabin will also present their latest films-in-progress, including a documentary that they have been filming in Japan and Russia over the last year.
The festival will also host independent filmmakers from Houston, Corpus Christi, New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lafayette. On Sunday at Cité des Arts, three Zydeco music films will be screened along with a panel discussion on Zydeco music with music critic Herman Fuselier, musician Nathan Williams, and Roger Wood, author of the book “Texas Zydeco.”
The Festival will screen a wide variety of new, cutting-edge independent films, including several Louisiana premieres and one world premiere. Among the Louisiana premieres is October Country, by Portland, Oregon filmmakers Michael Palmieri and Donal Mosher. A beautifully rendered portrait of an American family struggling for stability, the film has won multiple film festival awards nationally and internationally and has been nominated for Best Documentary by the prestigious Independent Spirit Awards.
Financial and community support for the Festival is provided by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, the Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission, the National Film Board of Canada, and the Québec Government Delegation.
